Our vision is that Belfast is recognised globally
as a healthy, equitable and sustainable city

Healthy Cities 21st Century

Health at the Heart of Belfast

Belfast Healthy Cities today launched their plans to make Belfast a child friendly, inclusive, global city at their ‘Health at the Heart of Belfast’ event in City Hall.

The plans were set out in two documents which make the response to Belfast City Council’s consultation to their Belfast Agenda and the first stage of the Local Development Plan. These documents ‘Tackling inequalities in a fast changing Belfast’ and  ‘A Plan Fit for Children’ draw from the experiences of healthy cities from right across the World Health Organization network.

Belfast Healthy Cities launched the documents at the Health at the Heart of Belfast event, along with experts from Queen’s University, Belfast, and Ulster University and elected councillors from across the city.

Speaking today Joan Devlin, Chief Executive, Belfast Healthy Cities, said:

“The Belfast Agenda and the associated local development plan offer us all the opportunity to set out a vision for what our city will look like in the future. In planning what Belfast’s priorities should be and how it should be developed, we have set out a clear vision for the city as child friendly, welcoming city for everyone, including investors. These plans can also help Belfast tackle the increasing inequality that can be seen across our communities. That aim is at the heart of our consultation response which we are publishing today.

“Healthy cities across Europe have developed strategic city plans which are delivering better health outcomes and playing a role in sustaining these cities. Our vision for Belfast is a vibrant, healthy liveable, connected and global city, and we hope that this vision can be incorporated into the final plans.”
