Following the significant interest in and success of the Belfast Healthy City 25th Anniversary Awards in 2013, we are delighted to announce the WHO Belfast Healthy City Awards 2014. This year awards will be presented in three categories in recognition of excellence in addressing a WHO Core theme.

Category 1: Healthy Places

Category 2: Healthy Living 

Category 3: Promoting Health Equity

KidsSpace returned once again to Culture Night Belfast on Friday 19 September.

Since 2011, KidsSpace events have transformed city spaces including St Anne’s Square; Buoys Park; Writers Square; Belfast City Hall; Urban Soul Cafe and an unused unit in CastleCourt Shopping Centre into welcoming spaces for families and children.

This year, to celebrate 25 years as a healthy city, Belfast Healthy Cities launched the Healthy City Annual Bursary award to support a study visit to a European Healthy City or Network. The inaugural award was made to Anne McNally, DHSSPS, who visited Oslo to study public health legislation.

KidsSpace Culture Night

Summer 2014

Belfast Healthy Cities delivers programmes to meet the overall goals, targets and commitments set for Belfast as a World Health Organization (WHO) European Healthy City. Themes include improving health for all and reducing health inequities; and improving leadership and participatory governance for health.

Creating Healthier Communities

Sustainable Food, Active Travel, and Health & Economics Now Available

The 2013/2014 seminar series explores local and European practice which demonstrates effective solutions to creating healthier neighbourhoods and cities. The expertise shared in the seminars will help to examine how health is shaped by sustainable food supply, active travel opportunities and the co-production of economic and health benefits.

Walkability Assessment report

The world is experiencing a rapidly ageing population. Recognising this trend in 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities was established. Its purpose is to provide a new approach to ensure older people’s needs are met and promote active ageing. Its focus is on creating an environment where older people continue to participate in social, economic, cultural, spiritual and civic affairs.

Reuniting Planning and Health Capacity Building: Outlining Linkages between Health and Built Environment

Introduction

This project aims to strengthen awareness and understanding among stakeholders of the links between land use planning, built environment policy and health and wellbeing. It is intended to create a starting point from which shared understanding of concepts and issues can be developed.
