Belfast Healthy Cities has announced its 2014/15 Capacity Building Workshop Series Learning from WHO Healthy Cities.

The first event, focusing on Health Literacy, with speakers including the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland, Dr Michael McBride will take place on 10 December. The workshop will be facilitated by WHO expert advisor Erica Ison.

The WHO Belfast Healthy City Awards were presented at the Reuniting Health and Planning conference in three categories

This event shared experience and expertise from leaders in the field of reuniting planning, place making and health, introducing fresh thinking to inform new ways of working in the context of local government reform. The event was opened by Belfast Lord Mayor, Cllr Nichola Mallon .The keynote speaker was Riccardo Marini of the world renowned Gehl Architects.

Belfast Healthy Cities is delighted to launch the Reuniting Planning and Health resource pack; a capacity building tool, developed in partnership with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), that aims to provide evidence, tools and examples of good practice that can support integration of health with planning.

As part of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) centenary celebrations, children in Belfast are being encouraged to think about the environment around them and how it has been shaped. The week-long event in the Ulster Museum is being staged in partnership with Belfast Healthy Cities, and the planning schools at Queens University and Ulster University, with sponsorship from the Department of the Environment, Belfast City Council and Eplani.

Belfast Healthy Cities took top place in a competition for best poster presentation at the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) Open Conference which took place at Titanic Belfast on 14 October.

The poster, which is available to download by clicking this article, features a Walkability Assessment for Healthy Ageing report, which gives an overview of a pilot project which developed an age-friendly assessment tool to gauge how accessible the built environment is for older people, conducted as part of Belfast’s application to be a WHO Age-friendly city.

The World Health Organization Healthy Cities International conference in Athens has heard tributes to work delivered in Belfast to improve the health and wellbeing of its citizens.The Athens gathering is examining health in the city and city living, inequalities and the impact, which all government policy has on the health of the population.

International Healthy Cities Conference

This week the International Healthy Cities Conference marks 25 years of the European and global Healthy Cities movement. The movement represents one of the most enduring and thriving international public health initiatives. This Conference offers the opportunity to celebrate and take stock of the collective achievements of Healthy Cities, which are based on the leadership and creativity of hundreds of cities across Europe and around the world.

Belfast Healthy Cities would like to welcome children and their parents to a ‘Planning my City’ Event. The event will be hosted by the Ulster Museum in the Discover Arts Zone and will run over four days from Tuesday 28 – Friday 31 October from 10am to 4pm each day.
